Names of God, starting in Genesis:

  • Our great God introduces Himself as God, Mighty Creator, Elohim. Genesis 1:1
  • The next name God gives us is El Roi, the God Who Sees Me. Genesis 16:13
  • God tells Abram that He is El Shaddai, God Almighty. Genesis 17:1
  • Abraham called on El Olam, the Everlasting God. Genesis 21:33
  • God showed Himself as Jehovah Jireh, The Lord will Provide. Genesis 22:14
  • When Moses turned aside to see the burning bush, God declared Himself as I AM WHO I AM. Exodus 3:14

  • King David speaks of the glory of God, calling Him “King of glory” five times! Psalm 24:7-10.
  • God is Machseh, our Refuge. Psalm 91:2
  • God is Shophet, Judge. Psalm 94:15
  • David praises the LORD as Jehovah Tsuri, our Rock, who saves us. Psalm 144:1
  • Not only is He the Rock, but our Strong Tower, Migdal-Oz. Proverbs 18:10
  • Isaiah 9:6 declares to us that Jesus is Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
  • Still in Isaiah, the prophet speaks of Qedosh Yisrael, the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 29:19
  • So rich in meaning and scope, Isaiah continues to describe our Lord as Ga-al, Redeemer.  Isaiah 44:6
  • The LORD is the true God; He is the living God, El Chay, the eternal King. Jeremiah 10:10
  • Jeremiah continues in his worship of Miqweh Yisrael:  Lord, You are the hope of Israel. Jeremiah 17:13
  • Jeremiah declares the LORD’s compassion over the sheep of His pasture:  “Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.

    “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
        “when I will raise up for David[a] a righteous Branch,
    a King who will reign wisely
        and do what is just and right in the land.
    In his days Judah will be saved
        and Israel will live in safety.
    This is the name by which he will be called:
        Yahweh Tsidqenu, The LORD Our Righteous Savior.  Jeremiah 23:1-6
